Only until the end of the nineteenth century did English Literature, first taken as a type of entertainment, become a subject of study in the UK. The reason why literature had to be, or could be, studied collectively as a subject was partially because of the emergence of the British Empire. Promoting the imperial culture of the "mother" country to the colonized therefore aimed to turn the ruled into "happy English children." Similar to anthropology and archeology, studying English literature enables non-westerners to acquire "Englishness" more systematically, or sometimes scientifically. However, in the era of globalization, English literature is no longer a single ethnic production but requires a fresh perspective through which we can decipher the nation and its legacies more critically, and be aware of the failures and success of the British Empire, and its possible contributions or damages to human civilization.
